Additional Details

first american edition of Poe's only book length work of fiction. With initial ad leaf at front and 14 pp. catalogue at rear. Poe published two installments of Pym in the Southern Literary Messenger in January and February of 1837. When Poe left the magazine, publication ceased. The complete text of the novel was brought out by Harper's in July of 1838. Pym gained immediate notoriety upon its release both because of its sensational subject matter and because it was believed by some to be a true report. BAL 16128; Heartman & Canny 38-40.
